CLEVELAND – Collaborating with customers to replace metal in LED lights earned PolyOne Corporation (NYSE: POL) recognition at the inaugural Polymers and Plastics Innovation Awards, presented by the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Benelux Division. PolyOne took first place in the Best Lightweighting Innovation category for helping Ayfar Otomotiv to replace metal in LED headlights for off-road vehicles, and was awarded second place in the Plastics and Electronics category for replacing metal in architectural LED lighting made by Finnish lighting specialist Kruunutekniikka.
“These awards are a recognition of the collaborative effort we bring to every project. In both cases, our experts helped innovative customers replace metal with specialty polymer formulations that can conduct heat, provide electrical insulation, or conduct electricity,” commented Holger Kronimus, vice president Europe, PolyOne Corporation.
PolyOne received additional recognition in the Body Interior category at the SPE Automotive Innovation Awards in Detroit for collaborating with sensor manufacturer TDK-EPC Corporation. The two companies teamed up to develop an all-plastic temperature sensor in the 2015 Ford Edge to control heating and cooling of the vehicle’s interior. The new patent-pending sensor weighs 38% less than the legacy metal design and is easier to assemble.
“At PolyOne we’re dedicated to providing specialty solutions that solve our customers’ unique challenges. Metal replacement is a primary objective for many,” said Craig Nikrant, president, Global Specialty Engineered Materials, PolyOne Corporation. “We are proud to be a leader in metal replacement technologies and solutions, and are honored that SPE recognized PolyOne for these successful collaborations with our customers.”
